Johan Falkman Exhibition
The exhibition Doctors in Lund includes seventy-one portraits of Doctors connected to the University of Lund. Many of those portrayed are world-leading within their respective fields. As an example can be mentioned Arne Brun, Brain-pathology, Stig Steen, Thorax-surgery and Björn Dahlbäck, Blood-coagulation.
All portraits are painted in oil on canvas and from life. A majority of the portraits are painted at the Museum of Antiquity in Lund between August 2004 and November 2005. Many of the sculptures, belonging to the museum’s collection, are included in the portraits.

Johan Falkman ExhibitionSome of the paintings were made in other locations. Cardiologist Stig Persson and Psychiatrist Ola Thulin were portrayed at Falkman’s atelier outside Ängelholm, between October and November 2003. Lars Lidgren had his portrait made at the castle Trolleholm, Gerhard Voigt was painted at The Historical Museum of Lund and Stig Steen was painted in the medieval church of Gylle. Falkman also made three group-portraits for the exhibition, two of the pathologists in Malmö and Lund and one of the surgeons, tied to Philip Sandblom, titled Hommage á Philip Sandblom. It was painted in honour of the late surgeon, art-collector and former principal of the University of Lund. Falkman got the idea on a visit to Paris where he saw a group-portrait by Fantin-Latour, depicting the colleagues of Delacroix, gathered around a portrait of the old master. In the portrait of the surgeons, the disciples of Sandblom are gathered around the bust of the former principal, placed between Pallas Athena and Caracalla at the Museum of Antiquity.
The project Doctors in Lund is unique. Doctors have been portrayed in art throughout history, but this is the first time that several generations of doctors, belonging to the same university, have been painted during a concentrated period of time to be part of the same exhibition.

The exhibition was made possible through a collaboration between Johan Falkman, The Cultural Department of the City of Lund, Kulturen and The Museum of Antiquity at The University of Lund.
